Breast Cancer Organizations

The number of breast cancer organizations is striking because only a little over 20 years ago, they did not exist. Of course, in terms of knowledge about, awareness of, and treatment procedures for breast cancer, a lot has changed in the last 20 years also!!

The following sections deliver interesting facts about the various breast cancer organizations: whom some of them are; what their goals are; how they raise funds for their programs; what some businesses are doing for breast cancer. All want to raise awareness of breast cancer and provide a means of getting breast cancer education to the public. Most want to help with research into this disease; some want to provide programs for screening and treatment on the local levels. All want to find a cure as soon as possible and totally wipe out breast cancer.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was one of the first organizations dedicated solely to breast cancer and its cure. There are several other outstanding breast cancer organizations which are also discussed below. In order to sustain their programs, all need funding and many have found yearly events, like walks and runs, help in this area. These walks/runs have additional benefits because the publicity for each event raises awareness of breast cancer and the need for education, screening, advocacy and research also.

The United States Postal Service has initiated a Breast Cancer Stamp, the first in their new program for fundraising stamps, which dedicates the net proceeds for breast cancer research. Other businesses also donate portions of their net income from breast cancer items to breast cancer organizations.

The pink ribbon has become a major symbol of breast cancer awareness throughout the world and the original idea for it was launched only a few years ago, in 1991. Since then, the pink ribbon has been made into jewelry and other items, using the profits for needed funding and for keeping everyone mindful of breast cancer. Now the pink ribbon is unofficially used by all breast cancer organizations because it simply conveys all of the reasons for their existence.
